Listening script — four people and their hobbies
Speaker 1. I took up the drums two years ago. In the beginning, it was really hard. My hands and feet just wouldn’t work together, and I nearly gave up. It wasn’t boring, though; I just couldn’t do it! Now I play in a band with three friends. The best thing is that you learn to listen to the others. If one person plays too fast, the whole song falls apart, so you really have to work as a team.
Speaker 2. My hobby is comedy. I tell jokes at our youth club on Friday nights. People think it must be embarrassing to stand in front of an audience, but honestly, I don’t feel embarrassed at all. For me, it’s the most entertaining thing in the world, and I laugh as much as the audience does. When I’m on stage, I forget about exams and problems at school. My worries just disappear.
Speaker 3. I cook. Every weekend I choose a country and make a dish from there. Last week it was Japanese, and this week it’s Mexican. Before I cook, I read about the place: what people eat at festivals, and why they use certain spices. So I’ve learnt a lot about how people live in other countries. It doesn’t take much time, actually, just two or three hours on a Sunday.
Speaker 4. I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was six. I love it, but it isn’t always fun. Before a competition I can’t sleep, and if I make a mistake in front of the judges, I feel terrible for days. Some of my friends say it takes up all my free time, but that’s not true. I train three evenings a week and I still have time for other things.
